THE LOST BABY By Amanda J Rees

Two weeks had passed since Tom and Laura visited their Gran. She had been poorly with a cold. The trip seemed longer than usual that Sunday and their excitement was almost too much. Gran was standing at her front door. The twins fell into her arms, glad to see she was better. "Go on!" Gran said, "go and play!" The twins ran up to the attic and to that special book! ""What do you fancy today?" Tom asked, "desert? Mountains? Or seaside?" "I love the sea!" Laura replied. "Ok, thatŐs where we will go" Tom said decisively. The twins turned the pages of the huge book and found a wonderful picture of a sailboat on the sea. "ThatŐs it! ThatŐs it!" Laura shouted.

The twins climbed into the picture, making sure they were going to land in the boat! The sea was very calm and there didnŐt seam to be anyone on board. From one side of the boat they could see the shore and on the other side was a vast ocean. In the distance Tom spotted a whale heading for the boat! Tom grabbed Laura and they moved away for the edge. The large mammal came along side. It rolled over to look at the twins. "Have you seen my baby?" she asked in a deep booming voice that made the boat shake! The twins didnŐt look too surprised that this creature spoke to them, as they were talking to a tree a few weeks ago!! Laura asked the whale where she had lost her calf, the whale explained that she and her baby were on a fishing trip, when the calf swam off to play with some dolphins, the sea became too murky and she lost sight of her. "Why donŐt you call after her?" Tom asked. "Well, if I shout the sound doesnŐt travel through the water!" the whale replied. Tom remembered a lesson at school about low and high frequency sound travelling through water. Tom asked the whale if she could sing? The whaleŐs eye opened widely, "sing!" she said, "how will that bring my baby back?" Tom explained about sound waves. The whale thought for a while and said, "teach me to sing". Tom sang a high note and told the whale to copy, out of this great mammal came a haunting sound, it make the hair on the back of the twins neck stand up!

After a while Tom had managed to teach the whale lots of different notes. As the whale was practising Laura noticed large waves with an occasional spurt of water heading towards them, she tapped Tom on his back. "Look Tom, Look!" she gasped. Tom turned to see five whales approaching the boat, as the whales came along side, one shouted "What's that noise? We heard it right out at sea!" "Is my baby with you?" the mother whale asked the others. "No, sorry!" they replied. Laura looked sadly out across the sea. "Call again, sing as loudly as you can" Laura told the whale. She took a large gulp of air and sang.

Tom and Laura watched for any sign of movement on the flat sea. Then from a good mile away Tom saw a fast moving object, like a speedboat. The object soon approached, as it bobbed out of the sea and blew a gush of water from its spout, the words MUMMY! could be clearly heard. The whale swam around and around the calf touching the youngster with her huge tail. The whales thanked the twins for their help and told them that whenever they needed to contact each other, they would sing! The twins felt very pleased they could help. They agreed it was time to return to the attic.

Once back they sat and looked at each other, "that was great!" Laura said. "Yes, I agree" replied Tom, "I canŐt wait until next week!"
