WAKE UP By Amanda J Rees. Farmer Ricks was always late for milking the cows, he was late for breakfast and he was also late for morning market. His sweet wife was constantly calling up stairs.
"Get up Joe Ricks, the day has already started, the cows are waiting and your breakfast is getting cold!" From under the bedclothes was a movement and a grumble, "what time is it?" farmer Ricks shouted from under the eiderdown. "It's time you were up!" his wife called. With that Mr Ricks threw back the bedclothes and got to his feet, his thick pyjamas and woolly socks made him look like one of the garden gnomes.
At breakfast Mrs Ricks told her husband that they will have to think of something to wake him up in the morning, but what could be done? Farmer Ricks did not like alarm clocks as the ticking kept him awake at night.
As the Farmer started his day, Mrs Ricks took the crumbs from the table and carried them outside to throw down for the birds. As the crumbs bounced on the yard all the local birds flew down, as they landed they started to chirp and sing, Mrs Ricks had an idea!
As she had no problem waking up early, she could place breadcrumbs along their bedroom windowsill early in the morning and the noise from the birds would surely wake her husband up! The next morning the farmers wife put out the crumbs and within a short time the outside of their bedroom window sill was full of birds all chirping and singing. It certainly woke Farmer Ricks up, "what's all that noise" he shouted. Mrs Ricks entered the bedroom, "why my dear, that's your dawn chorus, the birds are singing good morning to you". He laughed and got out of bed with a smile on his face. From that day on the birds woke Farmer Ricks up every morning and he wasn't late for anything again.
Maybe thatŐs how the dawn chorus happened. Have you ever been woken up by the birds?
