THE MIRACLE By Amanda J Rees

Sat on the shelf in a charity shop window is a very sad little bear, his eyes have been replaced with buttons, his nose is slightly bent and his stuffing is a little thin, he has been in the shop for so long he has dust on the top of his head. Looking in the window is Lily's mother; she sees the bear and knows that Lily would love him. Her mother took him home, cleaned him up and took him to Lily's bedroom. The little girl was sat on her chair by the window, she is a poorly child and does not play outside as her heart is week and has little strength in her legs. She hears her mother enter the room; Lily turned around, her long black hair falls across her pale face. "What have you got there mummy?" Lily asked. "Well" her mother replied, "I found him in a shop and I knew you would love him". "Oh mummy he is just beautiful", Lily held him up and then quickly cuddled him, rocking gently back and forth. "I could repair him for you!" her mother said holding out her hand ready to take the bear. "No, no he is just perfect the way he is" Lily replied holding the bear even tighter. Her mother left the room with a smile. Lily slowly got to her feet and walked to her bed. "You will sleep in my bed tonight" she told the little bear, "I don't think I snore, but if I do you must wake me!" She placed the bear in the bed, pulling up the white crisp sheets, his little head was just showing and his ears fell limp to the side of his face. Lily had her warm milk and carefully got into her bed, trying not to disturb her new little friend.

Morning broke and Lily rose to a very sunny bedroom, the bear was lit by a ray of light. She looked at the bear, he seemed more colourful that she remembered. His fur was a wonderful warm brown and the inside of his ears were a bright golden. Lily's came in and helped the little girl to get dressed. After breakfast Lily and the bear spent time sat in the garden having a tea party and making daisy chains, the clouds rolled in and it started to get cold, so her mother wrapped her in a blanket and helped her to the bedroom for a nap. As Lily woke she realised that the bear was missing, she got out of bed and slowly walked to the top of the stairs. She could hear the rain pounding on the windows. "Mummy!" Lily shouted. "Where is my bear? ItÕs raining and he's not in my bed!" Her mother ran up the stairs to get Lily back into her bed, she told her that she would go and find him. He was in the garden and soaking wet. Her mother quickly wrapped him in a towel, the little bear soon dried. As Lily picked him up she noticed how much heavier he felt, his tummy was firm and his ears stuck out proudly from his head. When her mother came up stairs with a snack, Lily showed her the bear, "he does seem to be changing," said her mother, "I expect itÕs because he got a bit wet". Lily did not believe her mother, she new there was something magical about him. For the rest of that day the bear did not leave the little girls side.

During the night Lily became restless and her mother rushed into the room. An ambulance was called as her mother was very worried, when the ambulance crew arrived, they accidentally knocked the bear onto the floor and under the bed, as the ambulance drove away a bright light shone out from underneath Lily's bed and then quickly went out! In the hospital the Doctors looked after Lily as best they could. They told her mother it would take a new heart or a miracle to cure her. It was a long night and Lily's mother stayed by her bedside, sleeping when she could. Just before dawn broke her mother was suddenly woken up by a bright light in the room. As she lifted her head she saw the little bear on Lily's bed, his eyes were bright and he looked like new! As Lily's mother was wondering where he came from, a little voice said "hello mummy, I see you brought my bear for me!" Lily's mother gasped "Oh Lily youÕre alright", "I feel great" she replied "better than I have ever felt before" with that the Doctors and Nurses ran into the room, they quickly checked all the equipment then scratched their heads, they could find nothing wrong with her. The Doctor said "well, we wanted a miracle and it has been granted". Lily's mother wept with joy and the little bear had a twinkle in his eye!
