WOODLAND FRIENDS By Amanda J Rees

Sometimes strange things happen that no one can explain. This very thing happened to a little girl called Charlotte, she lived in a little cottage with her parents on the edge of a wood. Charlotte would play in the trees on her own pretending she had woodland friends. She had tea parties and played games with her imaginary friends. Her parents worried about her, but Charlotte was happy.

On a bright autumn day Charlotte went into the woods, as she reached the place where she played something was different, the little table had a cloth on it with cups and saucers, flowers and someone had put cakes and biscuits on little plates. Charlotte was a bit frightened, but the cake looked too good, so she quietly sat down, had a cup of tea and a slice of cake. Suddenly she felt someone touch her shoulder, as she slowly turned she saw a little person, it was a fairy! She had a beautiful orange dress on, her wings had all the colours of a rainbow and she had long ginger hair. Charlotte did not run away, she just smiled and said "my name is Charlotte, what's yours?" With a tiny voice the fairy replied "my name is Amber and you are late for afternoon tea!" "IÕm very sorry," said Charlotte "I did not know I had been invited". Charlotte offered the fairy a cup of tea, Amber told Charlotte that there were others like her in the wood and that tomorrow Charlotte would meet them. It was getting late so Charlotte thanked the fairy and went home. Charlotte told her parents about Amber and that tomorrow she was going to meet all the other fairies in the wood. Charlottes parents smiled and said "that's nice dear!" They didn't believe her, they just thought it was her imagination again.

After school Charlotte rushed home and got ready for her meeting in the woods. She got to the meeting place and sat down. Suddenly, it was if the whole wood had come alive, the fairies had hidden themselves amongst the plants and trees. As they moved into the clearing Charlotte could see all their wonderful colours, gold, blue, red, yellow, pink, green and brown. Amber flew over to greet Charlotte, "we are all here" she said proudly. Charlotte could not take her eyes off these beautiful creatures, "you are all so lovely" Charlotte gasped, Amber told Charlotte how they have been watching her for ages playing in the wood! Charlotte sat down and one by one the fairies sat in a circle around her. "What do you all do in the wood?" Charlotte asked. One little fairy dressed in blue said "we make sure the plants are growing and that the animals are safe and happy" "it must be lovely living in the wood" Charlotte said with a smile, "itÕs Ok" said Amber "it can get quite cold some nights and when it rains we shelter under toadstools". "What do you eat?" asked Charlotte, "well" said Amber "we eat any cake and biscuits you might leave after your tea parties and we drink nectar from the flowers". Charlotte promised the fairies that she would bring cake and biscuits every day for them.

Charlotte kept her promise for many years, then one day it stopped, and the fairies became very worried, so they flew to the edge of the wood. Amber flew into the garden of Charlotte's cottage and slowly approached the window. Looking in she saw CharlotteÕs parents huddling around something, then as Charlotte's mother turned, Amber could see she was holding a baby. Charlotte entered the room smiling, Amber realised that the baby was Charlottes, (the fairies knew that Charlotte had got married, as they all had been given some wedding cake). As Charlotte took the baby from her mother, she looked up and saw Amber looking in, without a word Charlotte walked over to the window, with a huge smile. "What are you doing?" Charlottes mother asked. "Oh, I'm showing the baby the wood" Charlotte replied looking at Amber. "DonÕt you fill that baby's head with little people and magic" Charlottes mother told her. "Oh no mother" she answered and winked at Amber.
